3 Reasons Why Google Caffeine DOES Mean a Change in Rankings

So it’s official: Google’s Caffeine algorithm is finally fully implemented. And while Google insists that this won’t affect the ranking algorithm, brace yourself for a shuffle. Because while Caffeine itself won’t have a direct impact on rankings, it was designed to accommodate the big changes that are already underway.

Google Caffeine was first announced in August 2009, and after some feedback from the webmaster community, it was pushed live at one data center in November 2009. Now, it’s finally live across the board. As Search Engine Land reports, Caffeine is a change in how Google builds its index:

It is not a change to Google’s ranking algorithms. It is live across all data centers, regions, and languages.

But a bigger infrastructure means growth, and growth mean new levels of competition for everyone trying to rank. Let’s take a look at how each of Caffeine’s features can impact your rankings

Impact of Caffeine #1 – Faster Indexing

With Google’s previous index infrastructure, it took time for Google to add content to the index after it was crawled. Now, to keep up with how quickly the web is growing an evolving, Caffeine makes content searchable within seconds of it being crawled.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that pages will be crawled on a faster schedule more quickly/frequently than before. But it does mean that once they’re crawled, they will be available in search results more quickly.

That means that competition to rank just got a lot more fierce. Indeed, Caffeine has already resulted in a 50 percent fresher index than before.

That’s a lot more content suddenly competing to rank. Suddenly, older content is going to face a lot more competition from newer content.

Impact of Caffeine #2 – Increased Storage Capacity

So, Google’s index has not grown significantly… yet…

The Caffeine indexing infrastructure makes it possible for the index to grow more quickly. This is, no doubt, to accommodate how content is going to be added to the index on a more frequent basis.

This is yet another indication that more content is going to be competing to rank, and that older content is going to face more content from newer content.

Impact of Caffeine #3 – More Flexible Document Storage

Now, when a “document” (e.g. web page, image, video, etc.) is added to the Google index, Google will store more info on its relevance — i.e. what external pages link to it, the anchor text they’re using to link to it, etc.

This means content will start being recognized as relevant for more keywords/search queries. Which means more long-tail competition. Again, more competition because, suddenly, all this content that was not relevant before to your keywords is relevant now.

Opportunity or Threat?

Of course, as much as this mean you’ll probably face more competition than before, it also means that more of you content now has a chance to compete on various terms.

So what are you going to do with that?

Well, if you need some clues for ranking with Caffeine, consider producing content more frequently and participating through social media. Each of those will help increase the chances of having your brand’s content in the index as much as possible.

So at the end of the day, Google Caffeine does seem to entail a change in rankings, but only because it’s designed to accommodate other changes to the algorithm. Rankings will become more competitive because a lot more competition is being let into the index.

Of course, as much as you’ll be facing more competition, so will your competitors. This means that smart, calculated, and targeted content production is going to be more important than ever.
